Sanctuary community groups working together across Australia for refugees.
by Sue Hallam | gift type: Corporate, Money, Skills, Things, Time, OtherWe work directly, one-on-one, to help refugee families suffering in dire situations in many areas of the world, regardless of background.
Unlike the big corporate-style' charities, Sanctuary is a hands-on, non-profit charity, which began in Coffs Harbour, NSW,Australia in 1988. We receive no government funding and rely completely on the community for support.
We are a multi-award winning grassroots organisation and have inspired and initiated 12 community Sanctuary groups across Australia, all of which support and welcome refugees.
Our great concern is the tragedy of families who are accepted by Australia for an unfunded Humanitarian permanent visa, but face losing their chance of freedom (andoften their life) due to lack of airfare.
The Sanctuary Travel Loan Fund was set up in 1996, to provide interest-free loans. Once settled, families gradually repay their loan which is then 're-cycled' to help others. This scheme is self-empowering, not a welfare model and is very successful, with an excellent repayment record.
Sanctuary groups sponsor and welcome new arrivals and help them with all aspects of settlement into their new community, touching the lives of helpers and refugees alike.
We have also recently started a Penfriend scheme, connecting Australians with suffering refugees overseas, bringing greater understanding and sharing.
