Helping women in faraway places

by Karen Stockwell | gift type: Money, Things

I'm a member of a church concerned with social justice issues. It's the Wellington Ave. United Church of Christ in Chicago. They're an incredibly inspiring group of people who include Michael McConnell, the regional director of AFSC who has brought the image of rows of fallen soldiers' boots into public consciousness. We also have several members of Christian Peacemaker Teams who have worked in Colombia, as well as friends of the congregation who have worked in Iraq.
I'm a liturgist, a lay person who begins the service by connecting the scripture of the day to the real world. One day I addressed the theme of caring for widows and orphans and as I thought about what to write, I realized how women all over the world are horribly abused in our time. The list of mistreatments I wrote about included rape, domestic abuse, human trafficking, honor killings, etc. I realized I had to be a bigger part of the solution. I believe in giving a little on a regular basis. That way one can impact the world, but usually in ways one can't see. When I found out about Women for Women Internatioinal, I knew I was reaching out to specific people and could improve theirs and their families lives. My regular monthly giving includes $10 to the International Rescue Committee and I sponsor a woman in Iraq and another in Afghanistan through Women for Women Int'l. I have also bought lots of necklaces and bracelets from BeadforLife, an organization that helps women in Uganda. I recently came up with the scheme of creating earrings that would include beads from BeadforLife, selling them and sponsoring more women survivors of war. I have some earrings made and am about to start selling them.
I also give clothes and household items on a regular basis to local charities.
