Helping hand for the Children of Malawi

In the village of Manyesa, Malawi, many children die of starvation each year and those that survive have little chance for an education. Bob and Mary Burns are trying to change that. They met a young man from Malawi and when they heard about the abject poverty in his village and his desire to help his people they felt compelled to join him in his efforts
Malawi, formerly Nyasaland, is bordered by Zambia, Mozambique and Tanzania in southeast Africa. It is the fourth poorest country in the world with a per capita annual income of $44. Malawi has suffered from severe drought for several years and crops are poor. The people suffer from malnutrition, malaria, water borne diseases and AIDS.
Believing that education can help end this cycle of poverty, hunger and disease Bob and Mary formed the Kasimu Education Fund (KEF); a 501 (c)(3) non-government agency (NGO). KEF is creating opportunities for the children of the Kasimu Grammar School and for the people it serves.
Today the Kasimu Education Fund is putting all its efforts into improving the infrastructure of the grammar school. There are five teachers, paid by the government and six volunteer teacher aides teaching 1000 students!
The Fund has provided the first workbooks for all the children and 122 school uniforms for the impoverished children. So far the Fund has created scholarships for 18 high school students; a daily food program; scholarships for three students to attend teacher’s college; an administration building for the school and a $25 monthly stipend for all teachers and teacher aides.
There are no classrooms for the first four grades and the Fund is now trying to raise money to build four much needed classrooms at a total cost of $14,000. The villagers are making 160,000 bricks for the construction of these classrooms
For the first time there is hope for the people served by the Kasimu Grammar School and the local chiefs of the nine tribes served by the school have written the Fund to express their gratitude for providing the first signs of hope for their people
If you are interested in helping this worthy cause you may send donations to the Kasimu Education Fund in care of 1667 Springer Road, Mountain View, CA 94040. All donations are tax deductible and 100 percent of your donation goes to the Fund. The Fund has no overhead. All operating costs are covered by Bob and Mary and members of their board of directors.
